A clearer picture of Sonic Frontiers’ file size is coming into focus. Now that Sonic Frontiers has gone gold, the game is locked in for its November 8 release date. That’s less than two weeks away now, and with Sonic’s first open-world adventure looking like his biggest yet, plenty of fans will no doubt be wondering if there will be room for it on their platform of choice.

Sonic Frontiers will give players free rein to guide Sonic across the mysterious Starfall Islands in order to discover their secrets and find his missing friends. While it might not be fully open-world in the strictest sense –providing players with multiple “open zones” instead of one seamless map– what Sega has shown so far makes it obvious that players will still have plenty of room to run around and explore. Add to that Cyber Space levels with more traditional Sonic gameplay and a wide variety of enemies to fight with an enhanced combat system, and it’s easy to see how Frontiers likely boasts the most content of any Sonic game to date.

That, naturally, has raised the question of how big the game will be in a technical sense. Open-world games can be fairly demanding on hardware space, but by modern standards, Sonic Frontiers’ file sizes appear to be pretty modest. Following news of Frontiers' PC file size, Twitter account PlayStationSize reports that the PS4 and PS5 versions will weigh in at 23.090 GB and 24.719 GB, respectively. No word yet on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions, though it seems safe to bet that their sizes will be close to the ones on PlayStation.

These aren’t even as small as the game gets. According to the Nintendo eShop, Sonic Frontiers’ Switch version will only take up 10.4 GB, a mere fraction of the PC version’s 30 GB size. Chances are that’s due to the graphical downgrades the game will probably receive in order to run easily on the Switch’s weaker hardware, and with the portable console’s notably small storage, Nintendo fans may still need to clear up some space to make room.

A range of 10-30 GB certainly puts Sonic Frontiers in the smaller end of open-world games released this year, with the likes of Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West clocking in between 60 and 90 GB. It’s also dwarfed by plenty of other non-open-world games too, like early November’s other big release, God of War Ragnarok, which will reportedly be between 84 and 106.9 GB, more than twice the size of its 2018 predecessor.

Still, by Sega’s estimate, it should take players around 20-30 to beat Sonic Frontiers’ story, and around 60 to collect everything there is to find. Compared to the length of past Sonic games, that is incredibly hefty, and if Frontiers turns out anywhere near as good as fans hope, that means loads for them to enjoy for a good long while.

Sonic Frontiers launches on November 8 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
